  • On our first day out we took a bus from Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong, which is on the Mekong River across from Laos.
  • During this adventure we will be on planes, buses, boats and trains.
  • We got our first view of Mekong looking across to Huay Xai in Laos.
  • Once we arrived in Chiang Khong and got our first view of the Mekong there where it is big and muddy and flowing below the town. We rented bikes and rode around and rode by this Buddhist temple.
  • Amazing colors and patters adorned the side of the temple.
  • This temple, and it's dragon, overlooked the Mekong.
  • On the side was a shrine to the Buddha with offerings (incense, candles, food).
  • Alongside the shrine was a painting of a Mekong giant catfish (a specific and very rare species).
  • We then continued our bike ride down to the market and saw a stall with fish from the Mekong with some very big catfish - but no giant ones!
  • And on to the fruit market.
  • Taking in this beautiful temple just as the sun set.
