A cocao pod is broken open to reveal the ripe seeds inside (the seeds are used to produce chocolate) in the fogshrouded cloud forest of La Amistad International Park, Costa Rica. Using ancient knowledge of cocao harvesting, the women of the local indigenous Bri Bri community pooled their land and resources to form an organic-chocolate cooperative. To make chocolate, the women handpick the cocao pods, dry the beans, roast and grind them, add sugar, vanilla and other ingredients. Some of the beans are roasted in the area and then shipped to Europe to be made into chocolate. The Nature Conservancy has helped 17 community groups in La Amistad come together as a network known as Red Indígena de Turismo.
