A new innovative financial product, developed by The Nature Conservancy, provides individuals, foundations and corporations with an opportunity to support conservation projects around the globe.
“We are thrilled to offer people a new way to invest in the future of our planet,” said Mark Tercek, CEO of The Nature Conservancy. The Note, which is rated Aa2 by Moody’s, is one of the only investment-grade retail debt products available on the market today for investing in conservation.
The development of the Conservation Note couldn’t have come at a better time. The market for impact investing—investing to achieve a social-environmental impact alongside a financial return—is growing dramatically. Recent research suggests a $650 billion market for impact investments.
The Nature Conservancy’s Conservation Note is a fixed income product that helps channel capital to conservation-critical lands and waters, providing increased capacity to finance high-priority conservation projects around the world.
Investments in the Conservation Note will help the Conservancy fund projects at the country, state and regional level that are focused on conserving important natural areas and essential resources; helping protect wildlife; restoring drinking water supplies; and improving people’s lives.
Individual and institutional investors earn a fixed rate of interest, while generating environmental returns that are measured in acres protected, landscapes preserved, and habitat restored.
“The Note is an example of the kind of innovation we need to ensure sustainable funding for conservation in the future.” said Tercek. “We recognized that many supporters wanted to align their investments with their conservation values, and the Note provides a vehicle to do that.”
Foundations also have the ability to create impact that is in line with their mission and program goals, and may be able to satisfy some or all of their required annual distribution.
Since its initial offering in April 2012, the investors have committed to purchase more than $16 million in Notes.
