The Nature Conservancy today announced the appointment of the two new members to its global Board of Directors: Jeremy Grantham, Co-founder and Chief Investment Strategist of GMO and Jim Rogers, Chairman, President and CEO of Duke Energy.
“We are honored to welcome Jeremy and Jim to our board as our organization works to address critical environmental challenges around the world,” said Mark Tercek, President and CEO of The Nature Conservancy. “Their collective experience, perspective and leadership will be invaluable in helping guide this organization and advance our conservation mission.”
The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. The Nature Conservancy is focused on contributing solutions to the most significant global challenges facing the world: (1) conserving critical lands; (2) restoring oceans; (3) securing fresh water; and (4) reducing impacts of climate change.
“Jeremy and Jim are passionate conservationists and global business leaders that will enhance the board’s deliberation on strategy as well as maintaining The Nature Conservancy’s high fiduciary and governance standards,” said Steve Denning and Teresa Beck, co-chairs of The Nature Conservancy Board of Directors.
Jeremy Grantham is Co-founder, Chief Investment Strategist and board member of GMO, a global investment management firm. In 1997, Grantham (together with wife Hannelore) established the Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, a private foundation with the mission to help protect and improve the health of the global environment by raising awareness of urgent environmental issues and supporting individuals and organizations working to find solutions. The Foundation supports communication and collaboration in environmental protection, with an emphasis on climate change.
Jim Rogers is Chairman, President and CEO of Duke Energy. Rogers has more than 23 years of experience as a CEO in the electric utility industry. Rogers serves as vice chairman of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Rogers was also a founding member of the U.S. Climate Action Partnership, a collaboration of leading businesses and environmental groups that came together to call on the federal government to enact legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Rogers also serves on the board of Duke University’s Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and is a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations and, in September 2011, UN Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon named him to a blue ribbon commission of business and NGO leaders known as the High-Level Group on Sustainable Energy for All.
