The Endangered Species Act protects sea turtles throughout the United States, including the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, and international treaties also provide sea turtles with some legal protections. Even so, most sea turtles face a game of chance when they come ashore to nest, where poachers can easily catch them or plunder nests when no one is looking. But on some key beaches, turtle advocates are looking. Meet three people who safeguard sea turtles on St. Croix.
