Question

What is this whale doing?

Answer
This humpback whale, like many dolphin and whale species, is “spyhopping,” presumably to examine its above-water surroundings. The whale will use its powerful flukes to sustain its 1,500-pound body vertically, positioning its softball-sized eyes above the water. Whales have been seen rotating slowly in this position, seemingly to secure a 360-degree view.
