General MotorsThe Nature Conservancy's partnership with the General Motors Corporation (GM) is unprecedented for both organizations because of its size and scope. Since 1994, GM has donated over $23 million in cash and vehicles to the Conservancy, and funding from GM supports many conservation projects.

The world's largest vehicle manufacturer, General Motors designs, builds and markets cars and trucks worldwide, and has been the global automotive sales leader since 1931. Headquartered in Detroit, GM employs about 325,000 people around the world. Founded in 1908, GM today has manufacturing operations in more than 30 countries and its vehicles are sold in 200 countries.

About this Partnership
The Nature Conservancy and General Motors partnership began in 1994. GM was drawn to the Conservancy because our collaborative approach promotes a healthy economy as well as a healthy environment, and because of the global scope of our work.

In addition, GM has provided funds to the Conservancy to restore and protect approximately 30,000 acres of endangered land in the Atlantic Rainforest Restoration Project in Brazil.

Other Highlights
General Motors has donated more than 175 trucks to aid the often-rugged conservation work of the Conservancy.

An example of the entrepreneurial growth our relationship with GM occurred in 1999 and 2000, when the GM Card Group invited their cardmembers to donate a portion of their earnings to the Conservancy through the Cardmembers for Conservation program. Cardmembers contributed 19 Chevrolet trucks, including four Chevy S-10 Electric pickups, and $175,000 for a total value to the Conservancy of $768,000.

In 2001, GM and its Cadillac Division became sponsors of "In Response to Place," the Conservancy's 50th Anniversary traveling photography exhibition, which features the works of 12 internationally recognized photographers

GM employees have also been very generous to the Conservancy. In the last three years alone, they have donated more than $400,000 through their employee-giving program, which allows employees to donate a portion of their pay to charities.
