About the Partnership
Northwest Airlines (NWA) has inaugurated the EarthCares program with a $1 million donation to The Nature Conservancy on behalf of its employees and customers. This gift will support The Nature Conservancy’s Campaign for a sustainable planet, which aims to protect ten percent of the world’s major habitats by 2015. As two of NWA’s three hub cities flank the Mississippi River, this contribution will go specifically towards reforesting degraded land and protecting intact forestland from future development in the Lower Mississippi River Valley. The benefits of this program include the protection of standing forests that pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
About Carbon Offsets
Northwest Airlines customers have the opportunity to voluntarily offset the carbon emissions they incur on their flights through an online calculator that directs customers to The Nature Conservancy's carbon offset projects in the Lower Mississippi River Valley. Additionally, customers can choose to make an online donation to other Conservancy projects that Northwest supports including those in Minnesota, Michigan, Tennessee, and, internationally, in China.
NWA has launched its EarthCares program, continuing its dedication to reducing carbon emissions. Since 2000, NWA has reduced its total emissions by 25% through its $6 billion investment in modernizing its fleet with more efficient aircraft.
Northwest Airlines has partnered with The Nature Conservancy and introduced the EarthCares program to continue this commitment to making the world a cleaner and safer place.
