Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why are rainforests so important?

We are just beginning to understand the benefits provided by these special places. Here are just four of the reasons this habitat is so vital:

  • Rainforests are home to more species of plants and animals than any other ecosystem on Earth.
  • Rainforests play a significant role in maintaining weather patterns.
  • Rainforests play a significant role in maintaining the Earth's limited supply of fresh water.
  • Natural elements and species from the rainforest are the basis of countless consumer, agricultural, medical and industrial products.

How will my donation to adopt land be used?

Adopt an Acre® funds are used primarily to protect and restore land. Because these acres often require stewardship and management, a portion of the funds may also be used for the following types of activities:

  • Hiring, training and equipping park rangers.
  • Conducting environmental education programs for people living in and around the area.
  • Developing environmentally sound uses for rainforest lands.
  • Building ranger stations and other conservation facilities.
  • Other related program costs.

Can I visit the acre(s) that I adopt?

Since many of these areas are in remote regions ill-equipped for visitors, we cannot promise that you can visit. The health of the ecosystem is often dependent on its remoteness.

Who will own and manage the protected land?

The Nature Conservancy does not remove land from local control. We do monitor and lead the conservation programs we support, but they are carried out by our network of local partners.

How can I learn more about the acre(s) I adopt?

The Nature Conservancy will send you information about the specific region in which your adoption is located, including details about resident plants and animals as well as the conservation work being undertaken.

What does my Adopt an Acre® certificate signify?

It is simply an honorary certificate; it does not in any way denote ownership. What it does signify, however, is your sincere commitment to protect a piece of the most threatened ecosystem on Earth — the rainforest.
