The Value of Nature: Ecological, Economic, Cultural and Social Benefits of Protected Areas
The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity invited a number of authors to contribute case studies on the ecological, economic, social and cultural benefits of protected areas for publication in the SCBD Technical series No. 36. Nature’s Investment Bank: How Marine Protected Areas Contribute to Poverty Reduction (Full Report)
This study is one of the first to empirically analyze the link between biodiversity conservation initiatives and poverty reduction, to determine whether four particular marine protected areas have contributed to poverty reduction, and if so, why. The four study sites do not represent a random sample but were deliberately chosen because local experts believe they have contributed to poverty reduction.
