Range/Habitat: The Henslow’s Sparrow breeds from Minnesota and southern Ontario and central New York south to Kansas, Illinois, Oklahoma and North Carolina, but it is extremely rare in the northeast and its western range is contracting. This species winters throughout South Carolina, northern Florida and the Gulf Coast states. Its habitat is moist or dry fields and meadows, often with scattered shrubs.

Threats: Henslow’s Sparrow declined 91% rangewide between 1966 and 1993 according to the U.S. Geological Survey Breeding Bird Survey. Habitat losses stemming from the conversion of native grasslands to cultivated crops and drainage of wetlands have contributed to the decline and disappearance of some populations.

What TNC is Doing: Wings of the Americas’ Gulf Wings initiative identifies and protects the most important and often overlooked stopover habitats for the more than 260 migratory species that make the annual migration journey across or around the Gulf of Mexico, habitats that species such as the Henslow’s Sparrow needs in the southern range of its winter distribution.
