Status: Although there are no estimates of total populations size, the species is demonstrating significant population declines across most of its range. Habitat/Range: Arid grasslands with scattered shrubs such as sandsage or yuccas. Breeding range includes parts of Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and northern Mexico. Non-breeding range includes Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and 13 states in northern Mexico. Threats: Cassin's Sparrow are highly responsive to the vegetative structure of arid shrub grasslands and are therefore threatened by grazing, shrub clearing and other human activities that change habitat structure.
