Brief Biography
Alan White joined The Nature Conservancy in late 2006 as a Senior Scientist within the Global Marine Initiative focusing on advancing marine protected area (MPA) networks as a key strategy to further marine conservation objectives of the Conservancy. Alan is a recognized expert in coastal resource management, with experience in all aspects of coastal management implementation, research, and administration based on 26 years of fieldwork in the Philippines and other parts of Southeast Asia. Since 1978, he has undertaken numerous studies on the management, conservation, ecology, and economics of coastal resource management systems and marine protected areas in Southeast Asia. His experience includes providing management and technical expertise to multidisciplinary teams, representing national and local governments, NGOs, and international funding organizations, to design and implement coastal resource management plans. During his career, Alan has served as chief of party, team leader, project director, and technical expert on contracts to provide long- and short-term consulting services to a variety of funding agencies, including USAID, Asian Development Bank, and the United Nations Environmental Programme, among others.
Prior to joining The Nature Conservancy, he served in key positions on the Coastal Resource Management Project in the Philippines under contract to Tetra Tech EM Inc. He provided technical and management direction to Tetra Tech's team supporting USAID and the Philippines Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on this successful program. Prior to joining Tetra Tech, Alan served as the chief of party for USAID’s Coastal Resource Management Project in Sri Lanka for 5 years. After completing his Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii in 1984, he implemented a three-island management project in southern Philippines that set up the first functional community-based marine reserves in the country.
His formal training includes a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Hawaii and East West Center; Master of International Administration from the School for International Training in Brattleboro Vermont and a B.S. in Finance and Economics from the University of California, Berkeley.
