Brief Biography
Caitlyn Toropova is the Program Coordinator for the Global Marine Initiative. As a coordinator focusing on temperate coastal ecosystems, her role is to support and develop strategies that address Ecosystem Based Management, Conservation Leasing and Ownership of Submerged Lands and Ecosystem Services. By working across multiple projects and sites, she is tasked to have a broad knowledge of multiple ecosystems, key partners and current research.
Caitlyn works with marine staff across the Conservancy as well as a wide range of experts outside the Conservancy to identify functional needs and emerging issues for the Global Marine Initiative. Working closely with Dr. Mike Beck, she also helps develop relationships and partnerships with non-governmental organizations, professional societies, and foundations to advance specific aspects of the Initiatives' work.
Caitlyn has over 10 years of international marine science experience, with positions in environmental consulting, education and natural history filmmaking. She started with the GMI in 2006 after leading an innovative educational company designed to take youth into the field and work hands-on with whales, turtles and local people of California and Mexico. Caitlyn has written and contributed to several scientific papers, books and films; holds a M.A in Biology from Humboldt State University and a B.A. in Biological Sciences from the University of California (Santa Cruz).
