Strategies for Freshwater Ecosystem Conservation

How We Work

Learn more about the Conservancy's work to address fresh water issues in key sectors:

Sustaining freshwater resources is one of humanity’s greatest modern challenges. The Nature Conservancy is facing this challenge with sound science which has taught us that one of the greatest threats facing freshwater’s future is human-induced alterations to hydrologic systems. Through our Global Freshwater Team, we are working to integrate sustainable water management into every water manager’s portfolio as the framework they rely on to protect the systems for which they are responsible.

The Sustainable Waters Program

The vision of the Global Freshwater Team is to help protect freshwater ecosystems by advancing water policies that secure adequate water flows in rivers, lakes and wetlands. We are realizing our vision by working with partners including federal water agencies, private energy companies, municipal water providers and state governments. Internationally we are building relationships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), USAID and the World Bank. Through a core group of scientists and freshwater specialists, the Global Freshwater Team promotes site-based projects across Conservancy state and country programs to implement ecologically sustainable water management.
