Nature Conservancy Forum to Focus on Freshwater Management
ARLINGTON, Va.—June 21, 2006—The Nature Conservancy’s International Leadership Council, composed of more than two dozen leaders, will convene in Washington D.C. on June 22 and June 23 to learn more about the crucial role that freshwater ecosystems play in global development and conservation.
One of the world’s leading corporate forums focusing on the challenges of confronting biodiversity preservation, habitat conservation and natural resource management, the ILC will explore strategies to manage freshwater around the world for the benefit of both people and nature. Conservancy scientists and policy experts will make presentations. Sandra Postel, founder of the Global Water Policy Project and a leading authority on freshwater issues, will be the keynote speaker. Nestle Waters, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Duke Energy will brief participants on their involvement in freshwater conservation projects.
Brian Richter, director of the Conservancy’s Sustainable Waters Program and co-author of “Rivers for Life,” welcomed the ILC’s interest in finding solutions to freshwater conservation challenges.
“Utilizing the collective strengths of our corporate partners and The Nature Conservancy’s scientific approach to conservation, we can all work to find sustainable solutions to the primary threats to the freshwater systems we all rely on,” Richter said. “Healthy human and natural communities all require freshwater and The Nature Conservancy believes that it is possible to meet the needs of both. Our corporate sponsors are interested in the future of freshwater and how they can promote its ecologically sustainable management. There is a great deal of value to be had from different perspectives.”
