Join members of The Nature Conservancy's Global Freshwater Team for a three-day training on the development and application of environmental flow recommendations December 18-20, 2007, at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

Natural resource managers, fisheries scientists, water managers, engineers, hydrologists and ecologists will all benefit greatly from the lectures, discussions, computer-based demonstrations and hands-on training exercises.

Course Overview
The Nature Conservancy's direct experience at freshwater project sites in the United States and around the world, as well as  collaborations with a multitude of partners, provides the foundation for this intensive three-day training.

The course will:

  • provide an overview of the environmental flows concept
  • explain the importance of the hydrologic regime to ecosystem health
  • describe tools and methods available for application
  • present case studies where environmental flow recommendations have been collaboratively developed and implemented

Participants will also receive in-depth training in the use and application of the Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA) software, a program developed by The Nature Conservancy. Now in its seventh iteration, the program has helped nearly 2,000 water resource managers, hydrologists, ecologists, researchers and policy makers understand hydrologic alteration, develop environmental flow recommendations or evaluate future water management scenarios.

What to Bring
All participants will need to provide their own laptop computers. The IHA software will run on any version of Windows and requires approximately 4MB of disk space.

Training Location

The center is located on a large campus surrounded by miles of footpaths and hiking trails and is easily accessible from Washington Dulles International Airport, Reagan National Airport and Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

Lodging and Meals
Lodging and meals will be provided on campus. Day care is also available (to be arranged by individual participants).
