Few people know where the wood that makes up their purchased furniture or paper products came from.
And probably fewer know whether those forests were sustainably managed and legally harvested before that timber became a coffee table or a paper card.
But knowing is important — because more than 25 percent of the hardwood lumber and plywood traded today may be harvested illegally and managed unsustainably.
Illegal logging and deforestation have devastating consequences — such as the loss of habitat and increased carbon emissions causing climate change — for people, wildlife and the natural systems that depend on healthy forests.
Buying wood and paper products that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) — goods that are guaranteed to have come from sustainably-managed and legally-harvested forests — is a great way to ensure that your magazine or wooden bauble didn’t cost an orangutan its home.
This holiday season, The Nature Conservancy is providing you with a guide to buying FSC-Certified gifts.
So shop till you drop, and be certain that your gift is a sustainable one.
