Elk Woods
Oklahoma, Cherokee County
Size 80 acres
Price $100,500.00
The property is or will be encumbered by a conservation easement.
Description This spectacular 80-acre tract is surrounded on 3 sides by The Nature Conservancy's Nickel Preserve where North American Elk were reintroduced in 2005. With easy access from a county road, this property is entirely forested, harboring a pristine oak-pine forest that shows no evidence of ever being logged. Springs feed a boulder-strewn creek that crosses through the western portion of the site before flowing into the Illinois River.
Primary Conservation Objective The Nature Conservancy manages the Nickel Preserve as a core conservation area to support native forest, woodland, and savanna communities. More than 1,200 acres of the flats and valleys converted to non-native grasses are being restored to native plant communities in an ambitious woodland and savanna restoration effort, including through the use of prescribed burning and the reintroduction of North American elk.
Biodiversity Highlights Natural areas include oak-pine forest, springs, and a creek; habitat for the rare royal catchfly (plant), diana fritillary (butterfly), Oklahoma salamander that mostly lives underground, several species of migratory songbirds, and North American elk.
Qualifications and Restrictions Only recreational uses permitted including hiking, hunting and camping. No development, subdivision, or clearcutting.
