The combination of fast-moving water and large wetland areas adjacent to rural upland buffer results in a complex of wetlands significant to a diversity of waterbirds, rare plants, fish and wildlife species, migratory fish and neotropical birds. Kennebec Estuary provides important nesting and feeding habitat for bald eagles, black ducks and large concentrations of migratory waterfowl as well as habitat for over 50 species of freshwater fish and all ten of Maine's anadromous fish species as well as travel corridors for the rare short-nosed sturgeon and the Atlantic salmon. The shoreline includes significant eagle, migratory waterfowl, and rare plant habitat in the shallows along eastern shoreline of the Kennebec River and a major tributary, the Eastern River.

The Kennebec Estuary is one of the most important tidal freshwater ecosystems in the eastern United States. It provides habitat for an abundance of wildlife including bald eagles, migratory waterfowl and anadromous fish.
