The first vertebrates to colonize terrestrial habitats, amphibians remain closely tied to water. Most return to water to reproduce, and they have moist scaleless skin, only rarely living in drier environments. Amphibians characteristically emerge from eggs as larval tadpoles, later undergoing metamorphosis to their adult forms.
