In the spring of 2013, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis became the first duo in history to have their first two singles hit no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Hip-hop artist Macklemore (Ben Haggerty) has been writing lyrics since he was a teenager in Seattle, Washington. “I grew up in the 80s,” said Macklemore. “So it was really before this age of technology that gave you purpose and reason to stay inside all the time… We kicked it, we played games, we did sports. Everything was done outside. So there was an appreciation for nature."
His first EP, “Open Your Eyes,” was released in 2000 under the name Professor Macklemore. In 2005, he dropped the “Professor” title and released the full-length album, The Language of My World, simply as Macklemore.
Macklemore teamed up with DJ/production partner Ryan Lewis in 2009, building a wide and enthusiastic following on the Internet and through social media and selling out much of their Spring 2011 tour.
The Seattle-based duo released their self-produced album, The Heist, in 2012 – debuting at #2 on the Billboard Hot 200 list, and earning the number one position on iTunes. Their song “Thrift Shop” spent six weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the video has been viewed on YouTube more than 285 million times.
In Seattle, Macklemore says, “you have mountains in the distance, you have water right there, you have trees, you have this vibrant green. You have kind of the best of all worlds… on a sunny day.
