Travel to Brazil
|
A country celebrated the world over for the diversity of its wildlife and the passion of its people, Brazil is a nation of abundant nature and dynamic cities. On this unique journey, explore the Atlantic Forest from a hotel located within a nature reserve and learn about the Conservancy’s efforts to combat climate change through innovative work on the ground. You will also travel through the Pantanal, a freshwater treasure with strikingly diverse wildlife. Throughout your journey, you will be accompanied by Luciana Honigman, a zoologist and former Director of Conservation Science for the Conservancy’s Brazil program in Brasília. As a native of Brazil, Luciana will provide you with an insider’s view of this fascinating and vibrant country.
For nearly 20 years, The Nature Conservancy has worked to protect the varied landscapes of Brazil, a country larger than the continental United States. In the Pantanal and the Atlantic Forest, the Conservancy is protecting biologically critical lands and waters, engaging local farmers and ranchers to sustainably manage their natural resources and undertaking innovative, action-based projects that mitigate against the threat of global climate change.
The Pantanal—South America’s Everglades—is the world’s largest wetlands, covering an area larger than the state of Florida. The Pantanal’s diversity of life is simply remarkable: giant river otters, jaguars, marsh deer, tapirs and 650 bird species, including cormorants, egrets, herons, hyacinthine macaws, ibis, jabiru storks and roseate spoonbills.
Though only a fraction of the size of the Amazon rainforest, the Atlantic Forest harbors a comparable range of natural diversity, including species like the golden lion tamarin, wooly spider monkey, red-tailed parrot and maned three-toed sloth.
All travelers who participate in this trip series will receive a free, one year membership to The Nature Conservancy and four issues of the award winning Nature Conservancy magazine. In addition, 7% of each trip's proceeds will be donated to The Nature Conservancy and its conservation efforts in the destinations visited in this trip series.
