Event: Northern Leopard Frogs Calling

When: Mid- to late March
Male northern leopard frogs begin calling on warm sunny days. The typical call, given while the male floats at the surface, is a prolonged snore lasting two to three seconds followed by a series of stuttering croaks. Females begin laying eggs in masses attached to submerged vegetation a few days after calling begins.

Event: Birdlife Fills the Skies

When: Mid-May through mid-June
Hundreds of thousands of shorebirds and waterfowl come to feed and nest at the nutrient-rich wetlands on the eastern shore of the Lake. American avocets, snowy plovers, Wilson's phalaropes, and White-faced ibis are among the many species that rely on the Great Salt Lake as a critical stop-over point on their migratory journeys.

Southbound migrants include numerous species of warblers like Nashville, Townsend's, black-throated gray and others, as well as rufous, calliope and broad-tailed hummingbirds.

Not only will the colors of the blooming flowers astound the eye, a hike up Snake Creek Canyon may provide an opportunity to spot elk, moose and deer. Located in the Wasatch Mountains, just an hour outside of Salt Lake City.

When: Mid-summer
Visitors can enjoy outstanding flyfishing within this 18-mile pristine riparian corridor. The Strawberry River is one of Utah's most productive brown and cutthroat trout fisheries. Steep canyon walls and lush cottonwood-dogwood-will-rose forests protect birds of prey, mountain lions and numerous other mammal and bird species.

When: December
Matheson Preserve attracts numerous species of raptors in winter. Northern harriers course over the bulrush stands, sharp-shinned and Cooper's hawks dash through the woodlands in pursuit of small birds, bald and golden eagles soar high over the preserve searching for prey, and red-tailed hawks perch on favorite trees.
