In Hidalgo County near Mission, hundreds of cactus plants of several different species grow packed together like barnacles on a rock. Tamaulipan thorn scrub supports unusual bird life, including chachalaca, groove-billed ani, pauraque, buff-bellied hummingbird, great kiskadee, green jay, tropical parula and Altamira oriole.

Longleaf pine forests adjacent to the Village Creek watershed near Silsbee in East Texas. Habitat for 722 plant species, including Texas trailing phlox, scarlet catchfly and white firewheel. Hike, bird and study nature, or rent a canoe from local vendor.

Seasonal home to 6 million Mexican free-tailed bats. Females migrate here in spring to give birth and raise bat pups in this maternal colony. Located near Mason in the Hill Country.
