More than 400 calves are expected to be born to the Tallgrass Prairie bison herd this spring. This is part of a continuing effort to restore a 38,600-acre fragment of the tallgrass prairie that once stretched from Texas to Canada. Bison, along with fire, are among the key forces that sustain the prairie ecosystem. The Nature Conservancy introduced a herd of 300 bison to the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in October 1993. Stewards hope that the herd will grow to 3,200 in 10 years.
