Bison calves are born in the wild after a gestation period of nine months.

Piping plovers migrate to the alkalai lakes to nest on gravel beaches.

The yellows, purples, pinks, blues, oranges, reds and greens of native wildflowers dot the prairie and attract songbirds and butterflies.

Sandhill cranes are staging en route to their wintering grounds in the Gulf of Mexico.

When: Late April through May
Pasque flowers emerge on blustery hillsides to announce another growing season on the prairie.
