The endangered maleo, a ground-dwelling bird of the megapode family, is endemic to Sulawesi. Each year, maleos return to traditional nesting grounds located near hot springs in the rainforests of Lore Lindu National Park. There, the female lays her eggs and buries them deep in the volcanically heated soil. Upon hatching, the chicks dig their way to the surface to begin a new life.
