Identifying species and determining the rarity of dragonflies and damselflies in the Blue River ecosytem of southern Indiana indicate the quality of the wetland complex and influence protection and maintenance activities.

Where: Northwestern Indiana Prairie Preserve
When: August through September
Volunteers and staff collect seeds from high-quality prairies in northwestern Indiana, including Ivanhoe Dune, Gibson Woods and Kankakee Sands. In the spring, the seed will be planted, restoring other protected prairie land in northwest Indiana.

Yearly, the hills and woodlands of Brown County in central Indiana display their full array of fall foliage.

Event: Sandhill Crane Migrating
Where: Jasper-Pulaski FishandWildlife Area
When: Mid-October through mid-November
About 15,000 to 16,000 sandhill cranes funnel through Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area from their nesting range before continuing their migration to Florida and northern Georgia. At night, most of the birds roost in the marshes of the area, leaving in the morning to feed in surrounding upland fields before continuing their flight south.

Event: Waterfowl Migration
Where: Wabash and Ohio River Lowlands
When: November through February
Ducks, geese and an occasional bald eagle winter in the lowlands of the Wabash and Ohio Rivers in southwestern Indiana. Ducks arrive in late November and geese in mid-December. Both stay until February and March when they return north.
