The spectacular resplendent quetzal, named the serpent bird by the Mayans, mates in the cloud forests of Central America, especially Cusuco National Park in Honduras and Sierra de las Minas Biosphere Reserve in Guatemala. The male quetzal is iridescent green with four-foot tail feathers.
Scarlet macaws are disappearing from the Mayan Biosphere Reserve because of deforestation and illegal capture for the pet market. ARCAS has started a reproduction program using scarlet macaws that are confiscated from poachers. The main goal of this project is to breed the scarlet macaw and reintroduce them to the Mayan Biosphere Reserve.
