Sandhill cranes

Each spring, 22,000 greater sandhill cranes travel along the Rio Grande, stopping in the San Luis Valley before continuing their migration north. These fascinating creatures perform courtship dances and displays at The Nature Conservancy's Medano-Zapata Ranch, the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge and San Luis State Park.
Restricted access: to visit Medano-Zapata Ranch, register for a Naturalist Workshop or a guided field trip. Not open for public visitation. |

Hundreds of majestic greater sandhill cranes take flight in the Yampa Valley as they leave their staging grounds to migrate. The Yampa River harbors a remarkable diversity of wildlife, including more than 150 species of birds.

San Miguel River Preserves

The aspen are at their peak, covering the preserve in bright gold, orange and red. One of the few remaining rivers in the west that still functions naturally, the San Miguel features some of the finest riparian habitat in the upper Colorado River Basin.
