This brilliant yellow flower, characteristic of the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes, blooms along with multiple other endemic wildflowers.

Open to the public, through either the Oso Flaco Lake Natural Area entrance (operated by the California Department of Parks and Recreation) or the Rancho Guadalupe Dunes County Park (operated by the Center for Natural Lands Management).

When: March and April
Spring across the 250,000-acre Carrizo Plain National Monument is a riot of wildflowers. While kneeling to identify wildflower species, you may look up to see grazing pronghorn antelope or tule elk while golden eagles circle high overhead.

Where: Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve

The preserve has large expanses of Southern California native grasslands that produce spectacular arrays of wildflowers throughout the spring, including checkerblooms, shooting stars and goldfields. In late spring, when the vernal pools are evaporating, several species of wildflowers form colorful rings around the pools.

Where: Cosumnes River Preserve
When: Early to mid-September
Thousands of sandhill cranes arrive at the Cosumnes River Preserve to winter at the preserve and on adjacent agricultural and ranching lands.
