280 acres of Black Hills forest 5 miles southwest of Hot Springs. Property is protected on 3 sides by a TNC conservation easement and/or adjacent to National Forest land.
Whitney Preserve sits on the eastern edge of the Cheyenne River Canyons (CRC), one of the largest undeveloped landscapes in the Black Hills. In the CRC, elements of different plant communities come together; shrubs from the west, pines which dominate north, and grasses from south and east as well as having the riparian areas of the Cheyenne River and much of Cascade Creek, a warm water creek unique to this area.
This property contains pine savannas, mixed grasslands, woody draw, and shrubland. It provides a buffer zone 1.5 miles upstream of Whitney Preserve which contains a warm spring creek riparian and cool spring creek riparian areas, both upstream of the Cheyenne River riparian area.
