Stronger Non-profit Governance: The Nature Conservancy, Stronger Non-Profit Governance - Ira Milstein Progress Report

The Nature Conservancy & Strengthened Governance
A One-Year Progress Report

Mr. Ira Milstein states:

“The most important facts I searched for were whether the Board and Management had been activated and energized to face the difficult issues, and were earnestly continuing the process of improvement.

I find that this has happened: the Board and Management have clearly undertaken, and promise to continue to undertake, a good faith continuous review of all of The Nature Conservancy’s activities and responsibilities, in order to assure the public of The Nature Conservancy’s integrity in carrying out its important mission.”

Mr. Ira Millstein’s one-year progress report on The Nature Conservancy

In March 2003, The Nature Conservancy's Board of Directors received a set of recommendations from a panel of outside experts on steps the Conservancy could take to strengthen and improve its governance, accountability and transparency.

One year later, the head of the panel, Ira Millstein, produced a one-year progress report assessing the changes the Conservancy has made to strengthen its governance structure and internal policies and practices. In his report, Mr. Millstein concluded that the Conservancy has made a significant good-faith effort, and he praised the changes the Conservancy has made and progress we continue to make to strengthen our organization.

Specifically, his assessment found that the Conservancy's Board of Directors and senior leadership are:

  • more engaged in the oversight and management of the organization;
  • paying greater attention to managing risk and conflicts of interest; and
  • making solid progress in enhancing transparency and accountability.

The Conservancy's efforts over the last year have created a significantly stronger, more effective and better-run organization. As Millstein notes in his report, this remains an on-going process. The Conservancy has made it an organizational priority in the years ahead to continually reassess and improve its governance, accountability and transparency.
