Nature Conservancy Statement On Creation of Sustainable Development Network at World Bank
Washington, D.C.—June 30, 2006—Steve McCormick, president and CEO of The Nature Conservancy, issued the following statement in response to a recent restructuring at the World Bank that will integrate the Bank’s environmental and socially sustainable development division with the division that funds large infrastructure projects in developing nations.
“The Nature Conservancy appreciates the commitment to sustainability reflected in the World Bank’s creation of a new Sustainable Development Network. We are hopeful that this change will translate into infrastructure investment that meets the highest environmental standards while improving the quality of life for millions of impoverished people around the world.”
“Combining the Infrastructure and Sustainable Development networks creates an opportunity to more effectively align the Bank’s economic, social and environmental priorities. We look forward to working with the Bank to help advance a new approach that promises fuller integration of environmental consideration into strategies to alleviate poverty around the world.”
