Developing Strategies
Yunnan Great Rivers Project: Success
Assessing our progress in reducing threats and improving biodiversity and ecological health. Success will occur if we have an impact in three areas:
Biodiversity Health
Monitor the composition, structure, and function of the Mixed Forest stands to see if the reduction in fuel-wood collection resulting form our alternative-energy strategy is halting deforestation and forest degradation.
Threats
Establish baseline fuel-wood consumption rates in the village households prior to implementing strategy and monitor consumption rates periodically after implementation.
Conservation Capacity
Monitor the human capacity to maintain a viable village-based alternative energy program:
- Do villagers have the knowledge to properly operate and maintain the installations?
- Is ongoing training available in the county?
- Is there a service industry that can offer technical support and parts to maintain systems?
If these factors are not in place, the program could fail or operate at considerably less efficiency, thereby reducing conservation impact.
