Yunnan Great Rivers Project: Stresses

How conservation targets are threatened.

  • Stress on Forest Function:
The forest stands are being fragmented, making them less suitable as habitat for certain animals and plants. Old-growth forests also provide greater water-holding capacity than second-growth, offering greater ecological services to the 500 million people who live downriver.
  • Stress on Forest Structure:
Old-growth or primary forests with large trees are being cut for use as firewood and replaced by trees of smaller stature.
  • Stress on Species Composition:
Species populations are being reduced or lost from some areas due to habitat loss.
