Yunnan Great Rivers Project: Stakeholders

An understanding of the cultural, political and economic situation behind the threats and methods for abatement.

Workshops were held in 2001 at all nine villages in the site's core, during which residents identified their conservation priorities and suggested strategies tailored for their village. Additional villages will be included in 2002. Workshops were also held with technical and political Deqin County government staff.

All have identified the fuel-wood threat as both a conservation and a quality-of-life issue. They know that fuel-wood collection is degrading their forests and they are burdened with the drudgery of collecting it and the health issues of indoor-air pollution-but they have no alternative at present.

When we decided to embark on alternative-energy strategy, we conducted an informal village assessment as well as a formal village meeting to discuss implementation. Villagers, county officials and local businesses will continue to be engaged in the future to make sure that we have the greatest conservation impact possible.
