Sonoran Desert Ecoregional Plan: Assembling Portfolios

The team identified 100 landscape-scale conservation areas within the Sonoran Desert Ecoregion that represent the best opportunities to achieve tangible, long-lasting conservation. These areas capture entire ecological systems, such as a complex of mountain ranges and valleys, where ecological processes remain largely intact.

  • Each conservation area ranges in size from just under 500 acres to over 5 million acres.
  • Together, they cover about 42 percent of the ecoregion’s landmass.

The challenge, however, is that less than 20 percent of the areas are currently managed to maintain the long-term persistence of their biodiversity, with management responsibility lying with a significant number of different landowners.

Conservation strategies to preserve biodiversity in the Sonoran Desert Ecoregion will require significant collaboration with private and public partners.
