Sonoran Desert Ecoregional Plan: Assessing Viability
Landscape-scale conservation areas were evaluated for the number and type of conservation targets considered viable within their boundaries. To enhance the prospects for viability of selected targets, boundaries of conservation areas were adjusted to:
- Exclude areas with incompatible land uses,
- Capture ecological gradients, and
- Capture adjacent areas that contained similar or ecologically complementary, unfragmented habitat (such as riparian areas adjacent to riverine systems containing fish targets).
