From the rolling prairies of North America to the sun-struck savannas of Africa, grasslands have supported human life for millions of years. Today, they are home to some 800 million people.
But grasslands are the least protected, most threatened terrestrial habitat type on Earth. Housing developments, row crops, energy and infrastructure development, invasive species, altered fire regimes and groundwater extraction are rapidly eating away at these landscapes.
