Parks and Protected Areas for Life: Saving Places for People and Nature

Parks and protected areas conserve the natural splendor of our planet, they help safeguard our climate, economies and the quality of our drinking water.

In 2004, the governments of 188 countries made an historic commitment to build and strengthen systems of protected areas in marine, freshwater and terrestrial habitats.

Since then, the Conservancy has helped more than 20 countries designate new protected areas and develop plans to sustainably manage and fund them. These countries have to date declared more than 30 new protected areas, covering more than 44 million acres.
