Our Partners in Conservation

Alcoa Foundation

Since 1998, Alcoa Foundation has provided more than $1 million to support The Nature Conservancy in Australia, Brazil and China. In addition, local Alcoa facilities provide grants to support the Conservancy’s U.S. chapters.

Conservation Highlights:
  • In 2012, The Alcoa Foundation gave an additional $200,000 to the Plant a Billion Trees Campaign in Brazil.  By 2013, The Alcoa Foundation -- through its Plant Ten Million Trees campaign -- will be responsible for planting 700,000 trees in Brazil’s threatened Atlantic Rainforest.
  • In 2011, Alcoa Foundation gave an additional $300,000 to Brazil’s Plant a Billion Trees Campaign.
  • In 2010, Alcoa Foundation generously donated $200,000 toward The Nature Conservancy’s Plant a Billion Trees campaign in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, one of the most endangered tropical forests. Alcoa Foundation is committed to planting 10 million new trees by 2020, which will absorb more than 250,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year during their lifetime.
  • In 2009, Alcoa Foundation helped the Conservancy create a source of information for Brazilians regarding government conservation engagement in the country. The program resulted in obtaining significant funding for conservation of Brazil’s highly-threatened Atlantic Forest and Cerrado savannas.
  • In 2007 and 2009, Alcoa Foundation supported the creation of two national parks in China. The Nature Conservancy partnered with the Chinese government to improve conservation management, design educational programs and provide eco-friendly tourism services that generate revenue to support conservation.
  • In 2006, Alcoa Foundation joined with The Nature Conservancy to support “Nature’s Treasures Capital Campaign,” helping the Indiana Chapter buy land, undertake restoration (trees and native cane) along the Wabash River and fund an aquatic assessment of the Wabash River in southwest Indiana.

“The relationship between The Nature Conservancy and Alcoa Foundation focuses on environmental programs that set new standards,” notes Paula Davis, President of Alcoa Foundation. “Our work together is helping to provide a roadmap for replicating best practices and incorporating local communities to help ensure sustainability.”
