Karen Tharp

Director of Urban Stewardship and Engagement, The Nature Conservancy in Illinois

For the past 17 years, Karen Tharp has worked for The Nature Conservancy supporting restoration and stewardship of high quality natural areas in Illinois. For 13 of those years, she has provided leadership to the Volunteer Stewardship Network, a partnership between the Conservancy and the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission that supports over 110 public and private organizations who are empowering volunteers to manage approximately 435 natural areas statewide. In her current role as the Director of Urban Stewardship and Engagement, she develops strategies to increase community engagement and awareness statewide with a focus in the Chicago region. She is leading the Conservancy’s LEAF Program in Illinois in partnership with the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences. Karen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in International Studies from Illinois State University
